Suggestions on how to prepare for the field specialization exams in linguistics:
The field specialization exam at the MA level aims at determining the degree of the applicant’s knowledge of data analysis in all areas of linguistic structure as well as of the basic issues in linguistics. Applicants are advised to review the fundamental concepts and analytical approaches to language as presented in an introductory book to linguistics. Some of the recommended titles are:
- Fromkin, V., R. Rodman and N. Hyams. (2007) An Introduction to Language. Thomson Wadsworth.
- O'Grady, W., M. Dobrovolvsky and M. Aranoff. (2009) Contemporary Linguistics: An Introduction. St. Martin’s Press (Third edition).
